If you are considering hormone replacement therapy (HRT), it's important to discuss the risks and benefits with your GP to make an informed decision. Here are five questions you might want to ask your GP about HRT:

1. What are the benefits of HRT, and is it a suitable treatment for me?

Your GP can explain how HRT works and whether it's appropriate for your individual symptoms and health status. They can also discuss the potential benefits, such as relief from menopausal symptoms, improved bone density, and reduced risk of some diseases. HRT is not appropriate for everyone however and you will be able to discuss with your GP alternative options if this is the case for you.

2. What are the risks of HRT?

Like any medication, HRT has potential risks and side effects. Your GP can explain the possible risks, such as increased risk of blood clots, stroke, breast cancer, and heart disease, and discuss ways to minimize these risks.

3. What types of HRT are available?

Your GP can explain the different types of HRT available, including estrogen-only, combined oestrogen and progestogen, and testosterone, and discuss the benefits and risks of each.

4. What is the best way to take HRT for me?

HRT can be taken in various forms, including pills, patches, gels, and creams. Your GP can discuss the pros and cons of each and help you choose the best method for your needs.

5. How long should I take HRT?

Your GP can discuss the optimal duration of HRT, based on your individual health status, age, and risk factors. They can also explain the potential risks and benefits of short-term vs. long-term use of HRT.

However, remember that standard GP appointments are only 10 minutes so to make the most of your time with your GP, do as much research as you can beforehand.
